Boris Johnson appoints 39-year-old UK-born Nigerian, Kemi Badenoch, as minister

British prime minister, Boris Johnson, has appointed a UK-born Nigerian, Kemi Badenoch, as a minister in his cabinet.

Badenoch was appointed as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Children and Families.

Olukemi Olufunto Badenoch (née Adegoke) is a British Conservative politician and Member of Parliament for Saffron Walden.

In a tweet, Badenoch thanked everyone for their good wishes and said her appointment is a huge privilege to serve and make a positive difference on a number of issues close to her heart.

“I’m humbled to have been appointed a junior minister at the DfE. A huge privilege to be able to serve and make a positive difference on a number of issues close to my heart. I look forward to working with the ministerial team and everyone at @educationgovuk,” she tweeted.

Olukemi was born in Wimbledon, London to Femi and Feyi Adegoke. Her father is a GP and her mother is a professor of physiology.

She was elected to parliament in 2017, having previously served for the conservatives in the London assembly.
