#ScienceStudent: Olamide clears air over hit single
Nigerian hip-hop artist, Olamide Adedeji has defended his new hit song #ScienceStudent following criticisms that he promoted drug abuse in the song.
“Since the release of #ScienceStudent, the support has been massive. As you are all sharing, dancing, singing along to this relatable music of mine, I want you all to take some time to reflect on the subject, say no to drug abuse,” the 26-year-old street king wrote on his Instagram.
“Don’t abuse alcohol. stop mixing what you don’t know about. Live responsibly and drink responsibly. Don’t aspire the ‘highness state’ but a state of purpose fulfilment and passion discovery.”
The song, produced by Young John and BBanks is gaining momentum amongst his fans. The trending ‘Shaku Shaku’ dance also appealed to his fans with different video demo circulating on the internet.
While the song may be loved by some, others are of the opinion that the song is promoting drug abuse. Recall that his ‘WO’ track in 2017 also generated controversies after it’s release.
However, the Bariga born artist who raps mostly in Yoruba said though he saw a video online promoting drugs #ScienceStudent his message was far from that adding that he meant no harm.
“I saw a video online of #ScienceStudent promoting drugs, the song is nothing close to that.
“I just wanted to create something groovy but at the same time with a message for the youth to understand and not the harsh with it, I just added a little bit of comic to it.
“I know that some older generations are having issues with the song, it’s like when some of our parents were not comfortable discussing sex education with us while growing up.
“There is a part of the lyric that says, are you guys in competition with Sango (the Yoruba deity of thunder), why is there so much smoke, am begging with the name of God, please calm down.”
Badoo recently bagged the ‘listener’s choice’ award at the Soundcity MVP awards.
