I will politely decline if offered pension by Rivers govt – Amaechi
A former Governor of Rivers State Rotimi Amaechi has said since he left office as governor in 2015 he has never requested nor collected any money as pension from the State government.
If offered, the minister of transportation said he would politely decline and tell the state government to give it to pensioners.
Amaechi stated this in his reaction to a news report about a court ordering the Federal Government to recover pension from former governors presently holding or have held other political offices since leaving office as governor.
Amaechi was a Speaker of Rivers House of Assembly before becoming governor, a position he held for eight years. At the expiration of his two terms as governor, he was appointed Minister of Transportation by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. He is one of the few reappointed in 2019 in Buhari’s second term.
Tweeting via his Twitter handle @ChibuikeAmaechi, he quoted the news report and said while serving as a minister he does not believe he should also receive pension as a former governor of Rivers State.
He tweeted:
“I have never requested for or collected one kobo as pension from R/State Govt. If offered, I will politely decline & request that the money should be given to Rivers State pensioners. I do not believe that I should receive pension as ex-gov of R/State while serving as a minister.”
