Last week the story of a 16-year-old girl and her 23-year-old brother who married each other in Anambra State, raised eyebrows as it circulated on the Internet.

The 23-year-old, Cornelius Ezeibekwe, is a mathematics teacher in a secondary school in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Ezeibekwe also claimed that God told him to do so and backed his strange decision with bible passages from the book of Deuteronomy.

In what is considered not a norm in the Nigerian society, the story generated questions and arguments on different social media platforms.

In a recent interview with the Channels, the groom and the bride spoke about their union.

Chiadikobi Ezeibekwe said,

“I wanted to believe it even though I would die on it, or something like that, I wanted to believe it through the visions and every other thing.

“And on the 15th January been in the evening I was told to announce that marriage that day, I was just announcing it just as we are standing here … If this place is just a human being to be a witness to me.

“I just told them I didn’t even call them one after the other I just told them…

“I want to tell the whole family today that we have believed to marry ourselves.

According to video the bride allegedly accepted it in good faith. However, the stigma has affected her parents.

“The way people have been staring at me is not what have gotten used too…

The eldest son of the family, Emeka Ezeibekwe, vowed to resist their union.

He said,

“It’s over my dead body that they will call themselves husband and wife. It can’t happen.”
