On August 1, 2000, the Guinness Book of Word Records recognized Nigerian Senator David Dafinone and his children as the first family in history to produce the largest number of chartered accountants in one family.This is a recognition that has received resounding ovations from far and wide. And still worthy of emulation by parents all over the world.

Below are 10 things you need to know about the family:
1. Senator David Dafinone was born on the 12th of March 1927, in Sapele, Southern Nigeria.
2. He is married to Chief Cynthia Watson Dafinone and they blessed with three sons and two daughters.

3. All their children are qualified and chartered accountants. They all had degrees in Economics. They are all working for the same firm, Horwath Dafinone.

4. Sen. Dafinone completed his secondary school education at Abeokuta Grammar school in 1945 and emerged as the overall best candidate in Mathematics in the Cambridge School Certificate Examination in West Africa for that year. This feat automatically won him a scholarship from the then Governor of Northern Nigeria, L. H. Gobble, to further his studies overseas.

5. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Nigeria in 1970.

6. He was honoured in 1997 with the traditional title of Owhere 1 of Okpe Kingdom by the Orodje of Okpe and in 2003, the Federal Government conferred on him the National Honour of the Officer of the Federal Republic, OFR.

7. Sen. Dafinone joined forces with like minds in 1998 to found the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP.

8. In 2006, the Senator received a ‘definite entry’ in the Cambridge Blue Book for an outstanding contribution in the field of Accountancy.

9. He is the proprietor of D.O Dafinone & Company, which he founded in 1966 and later merged to become Horwath Dafinone and Company.

10. Speaking on why all his children become chartered accountants, one of his children, Chief Ede Omueya Dafinone said, “We were not persuaded to read accounting. I think the best recommendation for a child is to see his parents do well in a profession. Fate had it that none of us had the ambition to do anything else, and whenever we told dad about our desire to study accounting, he would say: “Okay, let us try that….Accounting is a fairly good profession…”.
