13 YEARS AFTER! Kechi Okwuchi honours victims of Sosoliso plane crash
Motivational speaker and singer, Kechi Okwuchi, has penned a short tribute to honour the memory of victims of the Sosoliso plane crash of December 10 2005.
Okwuchi in an Instagram post said she still struggles with the grief of losing loved ones but always prays for strength to keep going no matter how tough the road is.
Okwuchi further said she is letting her friends who died in the plane crash know that she’s going to keep her promise to live well and fully.
She wrote;
“I honour you on this day. To the 60 angels, to all my friends that were on that plane…
“You know the promise I made to you all, so long ago. The promise to live strongly, to live fully, to live WELL, all in honour of your memories.
“Have you been watching? Have you seen me struggle all these years that have passed, to do right by my promise to you? To excel as best I can in everything I do, to see the best in people before anything else, to surround myself with positivity, to discipline myself to see the bright side of things, to honor my parents, to love the Lord…to LIVE this life that was unwittingly saved that fateful day, as fully and as beautifully as I possibly can?
“I hope you have because it’s all for you. So much has happened since that day, most of it unplanned, and, thankfully, so positive. I used to think life was cruel, how it goes on, ignoring individual sorrow.
“Loved ones pass and time doesn’t pause for even a single second to acknowledge the grief of the ones left behind.
“I still struggle with that to this day, to be honest, But the one thing I pray for, always, is the strength to keep going, no matter what I face.
“Because my life is not just mine.Because yes, I live for myself and for my happiness. But I live for you too. And so I hope you’ve been watching, and… I hope I am making you proud.
“Love, Kechi.”
Among the passengers were about sixty-one secondary school students from Loyola Jesuit College in the Federal Capital Territory region of Nigeria.
Among the victims were two volunteers for Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders en route to work in Port Harcourt, Hawah Kamara and Thomas Lamy, as well as televangelist Bimbo Odukoya, pastor of the Fountain of Life Church, who succumbed to her injuries a day after the accident.
Pastor Odukoya’s personal assistant, Bunmi Amusan (now Bunmi Adams) survived the plane crash and got married a year later. Another victim was Okoloma Maduewesi, a childhood friend of Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who she fondly remembers as the first person to call her a feminist.
Okwuchi was badly burned and treated at Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa as of 14 December 2005 and at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Galveston, Texas, the United States as of 6 September 2007.
Kechi later went on to take part in the twelfth season of America’s Got Talent in 2017 as a singer and finished the competition as a finalist.
To the dearly departed of Dec 10 2005, to the 60 angels, many of whom were dear friends, I want you to know I am doing my very best to keep my promise to you all, to live this gift of life in a way that will best honor your memories & honor the Lord.
