2019 AWCON! Cameroon beat Mali 4-2 in third place match to claim Africa’s last World Cup ticket

The Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon beat Mali 4-2 on Friday to finish third in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations holding in Ghana.

The victory means Joseph Ndoko’s side have joined Nigeria and South Africa as Africa’s representatives for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

Cameroon were leading  2-0 lead after 40 minutes thanks to a brace from their Ninon Abena.

At the 44th minute the Malians got back into the game after Fatoumata Diarra in the 44th minute.

It seemed Mali would complete their fightback and win the game played at Cape Coast Sports Stadium when an own goal from Ghana’s Aurelle Awona in the 56th minute saw them draw level.

However, their hopes were short-lived after substitute Gabrielle Onguene netted shortly after the hour mark just four minutes after coming on.

Defender Christine Manie grabbed the 4th goal after placing a lovely free-kick into the top-right corner.

Nigeria and South Africa will play the final at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, with Banyana Banyana looking to win the trophy for the first time.
