34-year-old man on trial for trying to kill lady with pestle, hammer and pillow

A 34-year-old man is standing trial before Magistrate Agnes Akomaye of a Magistrate’s Court 6 in Calabar, Cross River State for allegedly trying to kill a lady with a hammer.

WuzupNigeria gathered that Patrick Effiong Bassey broke into the home of the lady, identified as Miss Pamou Ada Dorathy, on 5th January 2020 and tried to murder her with a pestle, hammer and pillow.

He was arraigned on a two-count in suit No. MC/68C/2020 before the court.

Count one read:

“That you Patrick Effiong Bassey ‘m’ of No. 8/6 Okoro Agbor Street, Calabar on the 5th day of January, 2020 at No. 10, Etta Eyo Street, Calabar within the Calabar Magisterial District at about 900hrs in the morning, did break and enter the dwelling house of Miss Pamou Ada Dorathy ‘f’ and committed a felony therein and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 411(1) of the Criminal Code Cap, C16 Vol. III Laws of Cross River State of Nigeria 2004.”

The second count read:

“That you Patrick Effiong Bassey ‘m’ of the same address on the same date and time within Calabar Magisterial District attempted unlawfully to kill Miss Pamou Ada Dorathy ‘f’ by using a pounding pestle and hammer to hit her on her head and tried to suffocate her with the use of a pillow and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 320(1) of the Criminal Code Cap. C16 Vol. III Laws of Cross River State of Nigeria 2004.”

His plea was not taken after the charges were read to him and the Magistrate ordered that he should be remanded in prison while his case file was transferred to the Directorate of Public Prosecution [DPP] for legal advice.

The matter was adjourned to March 5, 2020 for DPP’s report.
