8 new revelations about the mastermind of French attack

Less than 24 hours after an unidentified man drove a bus into a crowd as they watched Bastille Day fireworks display in Nice, France, a young man named Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel has been identified as the gunman who carried out the dreadful attack.
No fewer than 84 people have been reported to have died as a result of the terror attack.

Although there has no claim of responsibility from an outside group and no accomplices have been located, investigation on the attack have made some discoveries about the mastermind of the attack.

Below are revelations made so far:

  • The killer is a 31-year-old professional delivery driver living in Nice
  • Bouhlel is a French national of Tunisian descent.
  • He was known to police after a string of domestic violence allegations and “acts of violence and use of weapons”.
  • On 27 January this year, he was arrested by the police after a pub brawl.
  • Bouhlel rented the truck on Wednesday from a specialist garage at Saint Laurent du Var by Nice Airport.
  • He parked the truck on the promenade for nearly nine hours before the attack telling police he was delivering ice cream.
  • Bouhlel does not appear to have been known to intelligence services and was not on a watch-list.
  • The attacker was married with three children.

Meanwhile, at least 10 children are among the dead following the “cowardly and barbaric” atrocity that left at least one British national among the many injured.

Officials feared the death toll will rise, as dramatic footage emerged of the mass killer being shot dead by police in the cab of his truck.

As hundreds remained in hospital – including 18 fighting for their lives in intensive care – investigators have been searching the home of Bouhlel in the Abattoirs area of Nice and carried out a controlled explosion on a white box van nearby.
