Why Nigeria and Turkey may clash

President of turkey, erdogan

Following the failed coup attempt in Turkey in July, 50 Nigerian students have been arrested in Turkey on the orders of the government.

The detained Nigerians are mainly students of Fathi University, one of the private universities in Turkey. Turkish authorities alleged that the students were schooling in a terrorist organisation and that was why they were arrested.

They offered to transfer them to government schools but on the condition that we will pay same fees as private universities. a source told Thisdaylive.com.

The Fathi University is among the 2099 schools, dormitories and universities shut down in the wake of the July 15th failed coup in Turkey.

The Turkish authorities said the schools and universities were terrorist schools because they have links with Islamic scholar Fethullah Gulen, whom the Turkish government had accused of being the mastermind of the coup in Turkey.

But the school authority denied vehemently, saying they were good citizens going about their lawful activities.

However, the relevant authorities in Nigeria have reacted swiftly.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Sola Enikanolaiye, told Punchng.com that the government would summon the Turkish ambassador to Nigeria, Hakan Cakil, and demand an explanation for the deportation of the students.

He said, “I am hearing the news of the deportation for the first time from you, but I will follow up to get the facts and we are summoning him (Turkish ambassador) again  to demand an explanation (for the deportation.).”

When the coup was attempted in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari had been quick to condemn the putsch. He had also congratulated the Turkish president, Tayyip Erdogan for surviving the coup.

If the Turkish government does not quickly find an amicable solution to the issue, it may lead to a sour relationship between Nigeria and the country which has a number of investment in Nigeria.
