Abiodun demotes 75 Obas
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has demoted 75 traditional rulers, or Obas, back to their minor chiefs status.
WuzupNigeria reports that the 75 chiefs were promoted to coronet traditional rulers by the immediate-past governor of the state, Ibikunle Amosun, at the ‘tail end’ of his administration.
The promotion had, then, been deemed controversial.
Abiodun, on assuming office, had set up a review committee led by the Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, to assess the promotion.
The committee which had a series of meetings with aggrieved groups and persons recommended reversal of the elevation done by Amosun.
The State Executive Council at its first sitting on Thursday approved the revocation of the appointments of 75 minor chiefs.
The revocation was a sequel to the report of Oba Kehinde Olugbenle-led Chieftaincy Review Committee’s report.
The Chief Press Secretary to the state governor, Kunle Somorin, in a statement quoting the State Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mrs Kikelomo Longe, said the revocation was in consonance with the legal notice number three of 2019.
She said,
“The Council approved the revocation of the appointments of 75 minor chiefs as Coronet Obas in Legal notice number three of 2019.”
