AFCON: We are satisfied with third-place, says Coach Rohr

Published

Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr, has expressed satisfaction over Nigeria’s third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Egypt.

Odion Ighalo’s early goal in the third minute gave Nigeria a 1-0 win over Tunisia in their third-place playoff on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old forward, who is the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, was gifted an easy tap-in following a Tunisian defensive mix-up at the Al Salam Stadium.

This was after Jamilu Collins’ cross from the left was poorly parried by goalkeeper Moez Ben Cherifa against the legs of defender Yassine Meriah.

Nigeria, who dominated the game, has won the bronze medal at eight different Cup of Nations tournaments.

Rohr told newsmen during a post-match conference that he was satisfied with the team’s performance, adding that he was very positive about the future.

“We are satisfied with the third place. We managed to beat Africa’s second-best team.

“It was hard, so we are good with it.

“I told the players that winning a small final was better than losing a big one.

“I am very positive about the future,” he said.

On his part, Coach Alain Giresse of Tunisia said that he was proud of what his team achieved at this year’s AFCON, adding that Tunisia had lots of hope for the next AFCON and World Cup.

“At the beginning of the tournament, we didn’t do well. But after that our performance evolved.

“Tunisia have been waiting for a semifinal since 2004, and here we are in a 24-team tournament.

“We have lots of hope for the next AFCON and for the World Cup,” he said.

Algeria play Senegal in the Cup of Nations final in Cairo on Friday.

“He regained consciousness but due to a strong painful shock he had to be put back into a coma.

“His parents are at his bedside.

He has a scar around his neck where the lightning hit his chain, and that his lung was damaged. He needs time to stabilise.’

Zaborsky’s sister Karina Zaborovskaya said:

“He woke several times, but doctors were scared to take a risk, and he was put back to coma.”

She said:

“Doctors say that he was born under a lucky star. I still can’t comprehend it all. I cannot understand how it could happen

Ancelotti opens up on injured Iwobi

Published

on

Carlo Ancelotti reportedly said he took Alex Iwobi off in Monday’s EPL clash against Leicester City as the Everton midfielder picked up a hamstring problem.

Iwobi was withdrawn at half-time, with youngster Anthony Gordon coming on to take his place.

The Nigerian had been quiet in the first 45 minutes but part of the reason for that may have been as he picked up an injury.

“I wanted to use some fresh legs for the game,” Ancelotti told Sky sports. “Iwobi had a little problem on his hamstring so I took him out and after that I put on fresh players for the end of the game.
