The Accident Investigation Bureau says it has commenced an investigation into an incident involving an aircraft operated by Med-View Airline which occurred on Tuesday at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

The agency stated on Wednesday that one of the airline’s aircraft, a Boeing 737-500 with registration number 5N-BQM, was involved in a serious incident en-route Lagos from Abuja on Tuesday at about 3:07pm with 27 passengers and six crew members on board.

According to the AIB, there was no fatality but from the information gathered, cabin altitude warning came on during the flight followed by deployment of oxygen masks which necessitated the crew to carry out emergency descent procedure.

“Our team of safety investigators has commenced an investigation,” the AIB said in a statement on Wednesday.

The General Manager, Public Relations, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Sam Adurogboye, also said that the regulatory agency would commence its implementation of safety recommendations after the conclusion of the AIB’s investigation.

He stated that incidents witnessed in the industry in the last few weeks were common globally, adding that they were not indicative of regulatory lapses.

“Incidents happen everywhere in the world; it is how it is managed that matters. If there are incidents, they will be investigated and the NCAA will enforce the safety recommendations. We are not moved by sentiments or emotions in our decisions,” Adurogboye said.

Meanwhile, the Safety Manager, Air Peace, Capt. Godfrey Ogbogu, has said the landing incident of the airline’s flight on Tuesday had nothing to do with the airworthiness of the airplane.

“Our preliminary in-house investigation indicates that in a bid to make a positive touchdown as required by procedures during such wet weather operations, the pilot landed the airplane harder than intended which affected the nose-wheel. There are no issues with the airworthiness of the aircraft as Air Peace Limited assures of best maintenance practices at all times and spares no resources to that effect,” he added.
