Athletic Bilbao Stun Barcelona in La Liga Opener
Athletic Bilbao shocked reigning champions Barcelona with a 1-0 defeat in their opening game of the Spanish La Liga season at San Mames on Friday night.
Bilbao’s Aritz Aduriz emerged from the bench after 87 minutes of the match and converted his first touch with a stunning strike a minute later to hand his side victory. It is Bilbao’s first win against Barça in six years.
Barcelona were without Lionel Messi who missed out because of a calf problem, while Luis Suarez was withdrawn during the game with a similar injury
Ernesto Valverde’s side failed to click as new arrivals Frenkie de Jong and Antoine Griezmann struggled to on their league debuts.
Only the Dutchman emerged with his reputation unscathed as Griezmann spent almost the entire match scowling around El Catedral.
