A firm belonging to former Vice President and Peoples’ Democratic Party [PDP] presidential candidate in the 2019 election, Atiku Abubakar, has sacked some of its workers.

The media outfit, Gotel Communications, however, claimed the workers were sacked due to ongoing rationalisation and restructuring of the Priam Group.

One of the major online news outlets had reported the sack of 46 members of staff of GOTEL Communications outfit established by the former Vice President.

The sack coincided with the May Day celebrations in the country.

The workers were issued disengagement letters on Friday, during the holidays to mark workers day celebrations however with assurances that all emoluments due to them will be settled.

But the managing Director, of Gotel communications, Mohammed El-Yakub, reacting to the news report, however, said the Priam Group, which Gotel communications is aggregated under, is reorganizing and restructuring its workforce.

It said under the circumstance, some members of staff of the group will be laid off, with their full disengagement benefits paid to them and warned against such actions been used to impugn the character of the former Vice President, who ceased to be involved in the running of the affairs of his companies.

The statement signed by Mohammed El-Yakub said,

“It should, however, be noted that the current decision to right-size the workforce in Gotel Communication Limited is the climax of the on-going restructuring exercise which was initiated last year.

“It will, therefore, be out of context to ascribe any mundane presupposition for being responsible for the decision to lay off some of the workforce in Gotel Communication Limited.

“Following the unveiling of Priam Group last year, Atiku Abubakar, ceased to be involved in the running of the affairs of his companies. The decisions taken so far, and especially as it relates to the rationalisation of staff, is solely a management decision.”

Also, the management restated its commitment as a responsible organisation, in discharging its obligation to the laid off staff and any other staff that may be involved in the rationalisation exercise of any of the companies under the Priam Group.
