Twitter users groan as ban on Okada, Keke in Lagos takes effect today
The proscription of the operation of tricycle popularly known as Keke and motorcycles aka Okada in some local government areas and local council development areas in Lagos which takes effect today (Saturday) has sparked criticisms among residents on Twitter.
WuzupNigeria reported that the Lagos State government announced on Monday that from February 1, 2020, commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders would no longer be allowed to operate in 15 local government areas and 50 highways and bridges across the state.
Among the 15 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas affected are Apapa, Apapa Iganmu, Lagos Mainland, Yaba, Surulere, Itire Ikate, Coker Aguda, Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikeja, Onigbongo, Ojodu, Ikoyi-Obalende, Iru Ikoyi-Obalande, and Lagos Island East.
As the ban goes into full effect today, some residents have taken to social media to lament the difficulty in moving around the state without Keke and Okada.
A video also emerged on Twitter showing a trailer loaded with tricycles and motorcycles with some people believed to be the riders leaving Lagos in droves.
Some users also criticised the government for not providing an alternative and not taking action to rid Lagos highways of ‘rickety commercial buses’ before banning the operation of okada and keke.
@Blackshadie wrote:
Keke and bikes are not part of the Greater Lagos but old, rickety, no seat belt having, no side mirror having, no break light having Danfo buses are part of the Greater Lagos.
“Its like these people think Lagosians are rich people. What is this delusion

Finish 12 hours shift and you start trekking to the next bus stop 15 minutes away because the genius governor of Lagos banned Okada and Keke.

@followlasg which hypocrisy is this? You ban keke and make no alternative measure to fill their absence! I leave for work by 5am every morning.Keke is my only form of transport to and from work. Do you guys expect me to walk to work?! @jidesanwoolu Come and buy car for me #keke

Did you think about students in public schools that could only afford to lap their colleagues inside Keke just to get to school, before banning keke and Okada? https://t.co/0i2KJJy1Tt

@followlasg please bring back Keke, i spent 2000 naira today to & fro from Randle to costain today. Whereas with keke i spend only 300. 2000*7 days*4 weeks. How much is my salary?? Please bring back keke i beg in the name of God. Consider us that cannot afford it. Thanks #lagos

There’s no way anyone will try to explain this Okada/Kẹkẹ Ban in Lagos without sounding Stupid.
It’s crazy out here! No bikes! No Kẹkẹ! See People!??— أٓبِيمبَولا اَبِيؤوْ إِدْرِيْس (@HalaalBaller) February 1, 2020
Even if you ban okada, I can understand. However there’s no reason to ban keke. How do we move? Drop at bus stop & trek to death under hot sun?
I detest this country honestly. You think it can’t get worse but it somehow does. Fuck you @jidesanwoolu and everything you stand for.— Ander Herrera?? (@Iam_mc_harry) February 1, 2020
Couldn’t this okada/keke ban have been just away from highways? Now how do people who live in inner surbub streets get home from the bus stops? How do people run quick errands in the neighborhood? Monday how do kids used to kekering, get to sch? I don’t get it o.
