Twitter users groan as ban on Okada, Keke in Lagos takes effect today

Published

The proscription of the operation of tricycle popularly known as Keke and motorcycles aka Okada in some local government areas and local council development areas in Lagos which takes effect today (Saturday) has sparked criticisms among residents on Twitter.

WuzupNigeria reported that the Lagos State government announced on Monday that from February 1, 2020, commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders would no longer be allowed to operate in 15 local government areas and 50 highways and bridges across the state.

Among the 15 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas affected are Apapa, Apapa Iganmu, Lagos Mainland, Yaba, Surulere, Itire Ikate, Coker Aguda, Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikeja, Onigbongo, Ojodu, Ikoyi-Obalende, Iru Ikoyi-Obalande, and Lagos Island East.

As the ban goes into full effect today, some residents have taken to social media to lament the difficulty in moving around the state without Keke and Okada.

A video also emerged on Twitter showing a trailer loaded with tricycles and motorcycles with some people believed to be the riders leaving Lagos in droves.

Some users also criticised the government for not providing an alternative and not taking action to rid Lagos highways of ‘rickety commercial buses’ before banning the operation of okada and keke.
