A 40-year-old man, Peter Makinwa, who was accused of attempting to rape a homeless woman, was on Wednesday remanded in Ikoyi Prison.

The accused, who is a barber by profession, appeared before a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court on a two-count charge of attempted rape and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, remanded Makinwa in Ikoyi prison after he pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Hafsat Ajibode, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan. 9 at about 05:00 a.m. at Leventis Area, Lagos Island.

She alleged that the accused, who came out of his house to ease himself, saw the homeless woman sleeping on the ground near the lagoon and attempted to rape her.

“A security guard, who saw the accused trying to force himself on the homeless woman while she was struggling with him, came to her rescue and apprehended him,” she said.

The offences contravened Sections 56 (1) and 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Section 56 stipulates three years imprisonment while 260 carries 14 years imprisonment for offenders.

Further hearing in the case had been fixed for Jan. 21.
