The humiliation of Barcelona by English football club, Liverpool in the second leg tie of the UEFA Champions League semi-final clash on Tuesday night appears to have reignited the rivalry debate among fans of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
It was a night of incredible drama at Anfield as Liverpool stunned Barcelona in an unbelievable comeback from 3-0 down after the first leg to thrash the Catalans 4-0 and reach the Champions League final for two successive seasons.
Over the years, fans of the two football stars have always engaged in heated social media debates over who is a better and more skillful player between the duo and last night’s match offered them another opportunity to bring the debate to the fore again.
The two players, who have continued to dominate world football scene for over a decade, have smashed several world football records, winning five FIFA Ballon d’Or awards each. While Ronaldo has won three UEFA Best Player in Europe Award, Messi has won two
Messi has also won five European Golden Boot while Ronaldo has won four, among several achievements.
The social media is presently abuzz with supremacy debates which have made Ronaldo and Messi top trending topics on Twitter.
Football fans took to Twitter after the match on Tuesday night to reignite Messi vs Ronaldo debate, arguing who is a better player and also reeling out the achievements of the duo.
See some of the reactions:
Barca/Messi fans revel in calling Cristiano a tap-in/cross and nod merchant but in your heart of hearts, y’all know just one tap-in could have saved you from yesterday’s embarrassment.
And Cristiano Ronaldo would have gotten it.

Quick Reminder!!!
In 2012, Ronaldo said he owes Real Madrid fans the #UCL after that penalty shootout…He won us 4 of them in 5 years, 3 of them back-to-back-to-back.
In 2018, Messi tries to copy as usual. The rest is history. pic.twitter.com/5Nu7HIrHiY

Barca fans troll Ronaldo coz he failed to win 4 Champions League in 4 years
Yet they support a player who has only won 1 Champions League in last 8 years

With no respect to Messi or whosoever,
Ronaldo is the GREATEST PLAYER in the history of the Champions League.
He won the trophy 3 times consecutively.
Another goal who promised the fans threw away a 3-goal back to back like Lil Kesh.
GOAT turn Asun Gtbank food. ??

In his worst season, Ronaldo did a 3-0 comeback

Lastly, in football people have short memories. Messi scored a wonder goal vs Liverpool in the first leg and everyone starts calling him a GOAT, forgetting about Ronaldo and what he’s done. Last night goes to show how difficult it win 3 in a row, or 4 in 5 years. Respect. pic.twitter.com/nE7vspdyif

Until Messi can prove himself & win the UCL without Xavi & Iniesta, or at least win something with Argentina, Ronaldo will remain the Greatest Player of this Generation.
