College of Education Akwanga: Students protest over prolonged strike

At the College of Education Akwanga in Nasarawa State, students in their thousands staged a protest over a prolonged strike by joint unions of the institution.
Newsmen report that the academic activities at the College has been brought to an abrupt stop for a couples of weeks, following indefinite strike embarked upon by joint unions of the institution over non payment of their  promotion arrears and other entitlements amounting to over five hundred million naira.
The joint unions comprised of College of Education Academic Staff Union, Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education of Nigeria and Non Academic Staff Union.
The students, who in their thousands, said the action of the union was frustrating and the silence of the management was unbearable.
Our correspondent reported that the students converged at the gate and barricaded the Akwanga to Jos Federal highway and obstructed vehicular movement for over three hours.
Our correspondent observed that while the SUG president was briefing the students, some of them gathered around the union leaders and were chanting “we no go gree, we no go gree”
The students who urged the management to settle the staff to enable them go back to their classes, also lifted the COEASU chairman up and hailed him.
It took the timely intervention of the combined efforts of the the Police and Military to disperse the protesting students by using teargas.
Some of the students scrambled for safety, while some of them were seen throwing stones at the security personnel.
In an interview with the president of the students union, Comrade Paul Emmanuel, called on the unions and the management of the institution to seat on a round table and settle their differences.
