Commercial tricyclist spends six months in jail over police error
The Public Complaints Commission has rescued a commercial tricycle operator, Ifeanyi Abani, who was wrongly arrested and detained by the Nigeria Police in Ebonyi State for six months.
The police arrested the victim for failure to provide original particulars of his tricycle popularly called Keke Napep.
Abani, who operates the Keke on hire purchase, was unable to provide the particulars due to non-availability of the owner of the keke, Mr. Daniel Okoye, who reportedly travelled out of the state.
The commission intervened, sought for and found Okoye, who made the original copies of the particulars available and Abani was freed.
His impounded tricycle was released.
The Commissioner, Ebonyi State Public Complaints Commission, Prof. Michael Awoke, handed over the tricycle to Abani in Abakaliki.
He hailed officials of the commission, Messrs. Patrick Ede and Jesse Ebirim, for the professional manner they handled the matter.
Urging other workers to emulate the officers, the commissioner advised the public to seek redress at the commission whenever their rights were trampled on.
The Director of Investigation, Collins Chima, praised the officials who handled the matter for their efficiency.
Abani and Okoye thanked the commission for its good work.
