Coronavirus: Unizik suspends Chinese course, bars lecturers who travelled for Christmas vacation from campus

The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State has suspended a Chinese course in the institution amid fear of Coronavirus.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Charles Esimone, disclosed this on Monday during the 14th pre- convocation press conference of the school.

He said the University had also asked its Chinese lecturers who travelled for Christmas vacation not to return to the University while those who were around had been barred from travelling.

The VC said the Chinese course under Confucius institute of the University would now be run online.

The VC said the University would on Thursday confer honorary doctorate degrees on the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi; Chairman of Innoson Motors, Chief Innocent Chukwuma and Chairman of​ Dozzy groups, Chief Daniel Chukwugozie.

He said the awardees were selected based on their contributions to society, especially in education.

He said Sanusi​ would be​ conferred with a doctorate degree in Risk Management.

He added,

“Sanusi as the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria impacted positively on the nation’s education sector through his numerous policies.

“During the period, he built a facility worth​ N500m here in Unizik and many other things he did to the institution and others across the country.

He​ said Chukwuma would be honoured with a doctorate degree in engineering in recognition of his​ contribution in the auto industry.

Esimone said Chukwuma had alleviated the​ transport problems of​ Unizik students and staff by making a donation of vehicles to their use.

“Besides, Chukwuma is planning to build one​ of the best car diagnostic centres in the country in the University and the centre would be run by the students for their training.”

The VC said,

“9,571 students would participate in the convocation ceremony, amongst them would be 49 first class graduands, 2821​ ​ postgraduates, and 6750 undergraduates.
