Corpers on election duty sleep in buses, bare floors [Photos]
The lackadaisical attitude of the government to the welfare of Nigerians was again brought to the fore after photos of the National Youth Service Corps [NYSC] sleeping in buses, on bare floors and outside with no shelter members emerged online.
WuzupNaija reports that the corpers had been posted across the federation to serve as the Independent National Electoral Commission [INEC] ad-hoc staff in the presidential and national assembly elections.
The election, which earlier scheduled for 16 February 2019, was postponed few hours before the process begins.
The pictures of the sleeping corpers have generated angry reactions from Nigerians with activist and Social Commentator on Nigerian and international affairs, Kayode Ogundamisi, asking the electoral body: “INEC what happened to the funds meant to take care of Corpers?”
Nollywood actress, Uche Jombo Rodriguez, described the situation has disappointing and an embarrassment to Nigeria.
She wrote on Twitter,
This is very disappointing @inecnigeria
International observers are in Nigeria, youth corpers assigned to you are sleeping on floor ,people travelled to vote, budget spent, Its been 4years in the making yet you waited till today.. election day to postpone it??♀️
Immediately the postponement became official, Policemen watching corpers in a part of Lagos just shouted: “Dem don postpone elections o, make una dey go house”… and drove off leaving the vulnerable corpers more vulnerable … INEC no try

Corpers, ad-hoc staff sleeping under most severe conditions, sensitive and none sensitive materials all already dispatched. Police paid, party agents paid, foreign observers around. They had 4 years to prepare, yet need just 7 days more?! It’s a political assault strategy on PDP pic.twitter.com/iar7nU01qY

Please if you traveled to Abeokuta to vote and are now stuck, DM for address to my house. My grandmother is making Akamu and Akara for breakfast. Every Saturday morning, without fail. Our boys quarters is also empty and has 5 rooms and 3 baths. Youth corpers welcome.

This is what @inecnigeria has subjected people/corps members to
This postponment is unfair in every form of it. How can you postpone elections after things like this?
This is unfair to all the Nigerian Corpers. They slept Outside.#NigeriaDecides2019 #NigeriaDecides pic.twitter.com/9f7B5A3RzW

I expect NYSC to condemn this nonsense and do better in the future by engaging INEC about the welfare of the corpers.
Be assure provisions were made for accommodation and their feeding.Same happened to us in 2011 when I was a corper,no food we slept in the cold open space pic.twitter.com/QSWgj0ysjX
