Corps members give food items to Lagos residents
Some members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Surulere and Shomolu Local Government areas of Lagos on Tuesday gave food items to some residents.
Desmond Dike, who spoke on behalf of the members, told the News Agency of Nigeria that they were contributing their own quota to ease the pain in their host communities occasioned by the CODIV-19 pandemic.
He said that the lockdown had impacted negatively residents who were stopped from pursuing their sources of livelihood daily.
“The knowledge taught and moved us into doing things to show we care.
“We had to come together to support our communities, having seen what our colleagues did in Agege, Ifako-Ijaiye, Oshodi-Isolo, and Onigbongbo local governments.
“We want to also let our host communities know that we care and we understand what they are going through during this period.
“Part of the palliatives include Spaghetti, tomato paste, sugar, garri, Groundnut oil, noodle, all packed to cater for no fewer than 200 persons in each community.
“We have also given hand sanitizers, face masks for 200 people in Surulere and Shomolu/Bariga Local government areas,” Dike said.
Adebola Odunayo, the Local Government Inspector for Shomolu/Bariga, told NAN that the corps members mobilized themselves to support their host communities.
She said they had done well and deserved a lot of commendation for their efforts, and hopefully would do more.
“It’s a wonderful thing to give and I am very proud of the corps members who are just simply sowing good spirit among the people of Lagos.
“The people also appreciate their efforts as we were well received in Shomolu and Bariga Local governments,” Odunayo said.
Mr. Yemi Osikoya, who represented Mr. Abdul Salawu, the Chairman of the Shomolu Local Government Area, commended the corps members.
“I saw on the news what other corps members had done in other local governments and was hoping to see the same in our local government.
“Indeed, I am proud of these corps members who have done well to support the community, they deserve a lot of commendation, “Osikoya said.
The NYSC coordinator in Lagos, Mr. Eddy Megwa, told NAN that the corps members had continued to show their good character in line with their training.
