COVID-19: BON wants palliative for media houses

As Nigeria is gradually moving to total lockdown following the Coronavirus. Pandemic, the Chairperson of the Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria (BON), Hajiya Sa’a Ibrahim, has called on the Federal Government to provide Palliative support to media houses in the country.

Ibrahim made the call at a one-day workshop organized by the Kano state council for working Journalists in the state on Monday.

The Workshop with a theme: “COVID-19, How Prepared are the Media in Handling the Disaster” was designed to keep journalists in the state abreast of the Pandemic situation and what to prevent themselves.

She said the call was necessary because Media Houses were also affected by the lockdown should it happen.

According to her, most of the broadcast media organizations and by extension the Print ones who relied solidly on Commercial and Advertorials will face financial challenges or total bankruptcy, hence the need for government to consider them in its planned palliative measures.

In his remarks, the state Commissioner for Information, Mallam Muhammad Garba, said the state government wouldl support Media outfits should there be total lockdown of the state.

He noted that Media organizations needed government support at this trying moment to enable them to continue to discharge their dutues effectively by ensuring objective reportage on the pandemic.

He commended the NUJ for organizing the program on time.

Also in his remarks, the Managing Director of Vision Radio FM, advised Journalists on how they should go about covering the pandemic without endangering their lives.

He said every serious Newsroom should be on top of the COVID-19 situation because going otherwise will give rooms for fake news to thrive.

“Seventy to eighty percent of media coverage should be on the pandemic, while local activities should be monitored closely while synchronizing them with global happenings, so as to give accurate positions of things,” he said.
