COVID-19: Former APC spokesman wants testing centre for Rivers

Published

A former spokesman of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Chris Finebone, has expressed the need for the state to have a testing centre where suspected victims of coronavirus will be tested.

Finebone said though there had been provision of emergency numbers and directives for lockdowns, the people of the state needed to know if the state had the capacity to test and treat coronavirus cases.

Speaking in a telephone interview on Wednesday, he said,

“Do we even know whether our state has the capacity to test? If we don’t have. What is the arrangement to test suspected victims?

“Do they (state government) have to send people to Lagos for testing or Abuja or elsewhere? What equipment do they have? There is need to have a testing centre and tell the people and residents of Rivers that yes, we have a testing centre or we are relying on the testing centre of a particular state.

“There is need to have ours. If we don’t have ours, there is need to inform us about the testing centre where our own suspected victims will be tested.”

Earlier in a statement he issued in Port Harcourt, Finebone said apart from having a testing centre, the state also needed other equipment that could help in the fight against COVID-19.

He said, “For example, a few hours ago, Delta State Government displayed 19 ventilators just acquired to tackle this menace; so, have some other states undertaken different measures in readiness for this scourge.

“Rivers people and indeed residents of Rivers State would like to know the level of preparedness and capacity of the state government to tackle this pandemic beyond mere audio vibes. That is not asking for too much.”
