COVID-19: Lawyer advocates arrest of face mask defaulters

Mr Aliyu Lawal, an Ilorin based legal practitioner, has called on the Kwara Government to arrest and prosecute violators of use of facemask in the state.

Lawal made the appeal in Ilorin on Thursday in an interview with Newsmen.

He noted that since the relaxation of lockdown in the state on May 4, some residents were moving around without the use of facemask despite government order of making it compulsory.

The government and healthcare experts had advised and encouraged the public on the use of facemask to prevent the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

According to him, some people are working freely without facemask in the state without being checked.

“Despite the level of compliance to the use of facemask, some section of the public still move around without mask.

“It is time the government did something fast on them. Arrest the violators and make them scapegoat. Nobody is above the law.

“Security agents must stood their ground to enforce the use of a face mask. Arrest whoever fails to use the mask irrespective of his or her social status.

“I expect the people to cooperate with their leaders to end the COVID-19, not to frustrate the authorities. We need to unite to wipe out the deadly pandemic,” he said.

The legal practitioner, however, advised the public to be disciplined and follow the safety measures put in place by health officials in order to remain safe.
