A Kogi – based non-governmental organisation, Challenged Parenthood Initiative (CPI), has urged Kogi government to enforce proactive measures put in place to check the spread of coronavirus.

Ms Eunice Agbogun, Executive Director of the organization, observed in a statement issued in Lokoja Wednesday that containment measure was being flouted, a developed she described as worrisome.

Agbogun said CPI had noted that government’s directives on the stay at home and closure of entry routes, as well as the ban on movement of commercial tricycles, motorcycles and other vehicles, had been ignored.

In the same manner, she observed that the ban on all forms of social and religious gathering was not being enforced as some Churches, Mosques and liquor joints continued to operate, thus negating the social distancing precautionary measures.

“It is not enough to issue statement; there should be corresponding response and action to ensure Kogi State remains free from the virus.

“There still exist vehicular movements from other states into and within Kogi State.

“We use this opportunity to call on Kogi citizens to support government’s efforts and be law-abiding.

“We should not be deceived that COVID-19 is not real. The virus is here and it is spreading”, she cautioned.

She said that available statistic revealed that there was no confirmed case of COVID-19 in Kogi yet, but its location had made it vulnerable to the disease.

“The fact that the state is bordered by 10 other states, and as the main gateway to the Northern parts of Nigeria for people from the South, West and East, makes Kogi residents prone and vulnerable to the dreaded COVID-19.

“We believe that government’s proactive approach and citizens’ observing all precautionary measures will go a long way in curtailing the spread of Coronavirus and keeping Kogi free,” she explained.

She said that as the number of cases in the country had risen to 131 in 12 states, there was a need for the state to ensure strict enforcement of approved preventive measures.

She said her organisation was working towards identifying the vulnerable and indigent families, orphans, widows and widowers in the state, to provide them with relief materials.

“We call on the state government, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and all well-meaning people of Kogi, to be supportive, proactive and sensitive to the call to serve humanity, especially at this critical time,’’ she implored.
