COVID-19: NYSC donates face masks to Youth and Sports ministry

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), on Monday, donated 10, 000 locally produced face masks to the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development to curtail the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country.

The Director-General, NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim,  while making the donation in Abuja, said mask would help in the fight against COVID-19 in the sector, especially when sporting activities resume.

He said the masks were produced by a team of corps members in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in line with international best practice.

Mr. Gabriel Aduda, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, while receiving the donation thanked the NYSC for the gesture.

“We thank the NYSC for this gesture and I can assure you that these face masks will help prevent the spread of COVID-19 especially when sporting activities resume in the country,” he said.

Aduda noted that the local production of the masks was in line with the Federal Government’s local content and homegrown initiative aimed at empowering the youths and boosting the economy.

“The mass production of these masks clearly reinforces and actualized the noble policies of this administration to create the enabling environment for local content to flourish amongst our youth,” he added.

He assured that COVID-19 complaint infrastructure is already being put in place while the ministry awaits the Federal Government’s directive for sporting activities to resume across the country.

He stressed the need for sporting activities to resume in the country as soon as possible while strictly following the safety protocols.

Earlier, the Corps members team leader, Vincent Chidera, said the masks were produced in line with global best practice.

According to him, the production was borne out of the need to provide affordable masks for FCT residents in line with the guidelines laid by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON).

The Newsmen reports that the NYSC had in April donated hand sanitizer and other items to the ministry to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
