Delta residents ask for removal of their monarch, SEE Protest photos
Hundreds of residents of Ekpan community of Uwvie Kingdom in Delta State staged a protest today seeking the removal of their traditional head, Chief Newton Agbofodoh for allegedly fuelling crisis in the community.
Chief Newton, who is presently in the custody of the Delta State Police for alleged triple murder cases, was accused of fuelling the lingering crisis in the community which has led to the lost of lives and properties since 2014.
The protest, which was staged along the street to the palace of the monarch, saw the protesters singing various songs calling for the removal of the monarch.
They urged the monarch to withdraw the chieftaincy title of Unuevworo (traditional head) of Ekpan given to Chief Newton in the interest of peace.
The peaceful protest organised by Mr Innocent Akpototedja-Adjenughure and Mr Urumedji Kingsley, President and Secretary of Ekpan Integrity Group alleged that the crisis was over Newton dictatorial and tyrannical leadership which they alleged has plunged the community into the present crisis it.
The group said, “He (Newton Agbofodoh) also amended the Ekpan Development Committee Constitution without following the procedure as stated in the constitution and with the unilaterally amended constitution he handpicked the present committee stating that, ‘I am the Unuevworo and if anyone is not satisfied with my action should wait until you are enthroned as Unuevworo’.
“We are therefore demanding the removal of Chief Newton Agbofodoh as the Unuevworo of Ekpan.”
They also claimed that since the arrest of the traditional head for alleged murder cases since three weeks ago, the community has been enjoying relative peace.
Responding, His Royal Majesty, Emmanuel Sideso, Abe 1, said he will do everything possible to restore peace to the troubled part of the kingdom while also appealing for calm and understanding from his subjects.
The Uvwie monarch said he would not fail to strip the traditional head of his title once he is convict but however reminded the protesters that until Chief Newton is proven guilty or otherwise, he will not want to delve into a matter that was already before the court.
