A 31-year-old driver, Sunday Igba, who pleaded guilty to stealing a tricycle valued at N660,000 was on Tuesday in Lagos remanded at the Kirikiri Prisons on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The magistrate, Mrs O.O. Fagbohun ordered that the defendant should remain behind bars until Sept. 6 for a review of facts and sentencing.

The defendant, a resident of Agege area in Lagos State, is being tried for stealing.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Emmanuel Ajayi, the defendant committed the offence on Aug. 20 at Okekoto in Agege.

He said that the defendant absconded with a new tricycle belonging to one Mr Friday Ogba.

“The defendant collected a tricycle from the complainant on hire purchase with an agreement to be remitting N15,000 weekly.

“After the tricycle had been finally handed over to Igba, he was nowhere to be found.

“Efforts made to retrieve the tricycle from him proved unsuccessful as he refused to pick the complainant’s calls.

“When the complainant traced the defendant’s address, the complainant discovered that the defendant gave a fake address.”

Ajayi said that the defendant was later apprehended and handed over to the police.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which prescribes three years as penalty for stealing.
