The Nasarawa State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Uthman Adam, said the state will be going to the National Sports Festival, tagged: ‘Edo 2020’ to produce future stars for the national team.

Adam said this on Thursday while speaking with the newsmen on the sidelines of the North Central Zonal elimination prelims in Ilorin.

The commissioner explained that the state was poised to exceed all expectations, which he said was the philosophy of the present administration in the state.

“We brought the number of the contingent we had at the zonal elimination because we want the best for Nasarawa state.

“We knew the larger the merrier as far as sports is concerned, this is the first time contingents came in this large number from Nasarawa for elimination,” Adam said.

The commissioner, who boasted that he played football for more than eight years and that he’s a product of National Sports Festival, said the state’s basketball female and the male hockey teams have made it to Edo 2020.

He said the zonal elimination was an eye opener for the state because it would give them opportunity to know where it was lacking in strength.

“Our target is to ensure that the potentials we have in Nasarawa excel in Benin.

“We are taking them to Benin to be stars in their own right and to pave way for a better tomorrow for them,” Adam said.

He noted that the objective of the National Sports Festival has been met because the events have produced different athletes for the national teams.

He revealed that former Nigeria international goalkeeper, Peterside Idah, participated in the 1988 National Sports Festival in Rivers State and so many other athletes.

The commissioner advised the hosts, Edo, to ensure it put machinery in place to motivate the athletes in order to stimulate interest and ensure adequate security.
