Five things Nigerians expect from new Super Eagles’ coach, number 4 is a MUST

Published

The Nigeria Football Federation on Tuesday, August 9, 2016, announced on its website, theNFF.com, that German coach Gernot Rohr has signed a two year contract that will see the former Gabon, Niger and Burkina Faso coach work as Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles.

WuzupNaija gathered that at the contract signing ceremony at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja were NFF President Amaju Pinnick and General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi who both signed on behalf of the NFF.

Speaking to newsmen after the occasion, coach Rohr said, “We are happy that this has been sealed and we can now focus on other arrangements for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers starting in October.

“I have a German heart – the heart of a winner. I have confidence that with the right atmosphere and the right support, the Super Eagles have the capacity not only to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, but get to the latter stages of the competition.”

WuzupNaija brings to you five things millions of Nigerian football supporters, both home and away, expect the 63-year-old to achieve before his contract expires:

  1. Though Nigeria can no longer qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, coach Rohr is still expected to beat Tanzania in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Port Harcourt in a few weeks. The match would allow the German coach to justify his appointment to many football fans who do not believe he is the right man for the Super Eagles job.
  2. Coach Rohr would also have to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zambia on October 3, 2016. This will be the real test for the new coach considering it would be the first competitive match as Eagles’ head coach. And it would take place in a foreign land.
  3. Another thing coach Rohr will be expected to do is to qualify Nigeria for the 2018 FIFA World Cup ahead of Zambia, Cameroon and Algeria. It is noteworthy that Cameroon has appeared seven times in the mundial, while Nigeria has featured five times and Algeria four times.
  4. Another major thing expected from coach Rohr is to build a cordial relationship with other members of his technical crew and the players in the team. This is because failure to do this might spell doom for Nigeria’s qualification from the tough 2018 World Cup qualifiers.
  5. Nigerians also expect coach Rohr dialogue with the NFF as well as the players to resolve the controversies over issues of match bonuses once and for all. This has been the remote cause of players playing abroad not showing up for some crucial matches, especially away matches.
