FOUL PLAY NOT SUSPECTED! 22-year-old Nigerian student drowns during excursion in Canada

A 22-year-old Nigerian student of the Wilfrid Laurier University, drowned on July 6, 2018, inside the Ottawa River near Renfrew, Ontario.

Chuck Ozulumba was preparing to enter his fourth-year as a Bachelor of Business Administration student at the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics on Laurier’s Waterloo campus.

He was on a weekend excursion with other students at the time of his death. He was swimming when he went underwater. He was found and pulled to shore, where CPR was started.

Despite attempts to save Ozulumba’s life, he was pronounced deceased shortly after at the hospital.

According to Laurier’s press release, flags on campuses will be lowered to half-mast in honour and recognition of the tragic loss to the Laurier community.

“The university is extending support and counselling services to these and other students who knew him,” a Laurier press release said.

“Losing a student has a deep impact on the entire Laurier community. The university is focused on supporting each other and ensuring the well-being of students, faculty and staff.”

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled and foul play is not suspected.
