A Kwara High Court in Ilorin on Tuesday sentenced four Internet fraudsters to one year imprisonment each, without an option of fine.

The defendants – Atanda Femi Benjamin, Sadiku Muniru Dolapo, Olapade Oladimeji Solomon and Atoyebi Samson – were convicted and sentenced.

The Presiding Judge, Adenike Akinpelu, found them guilty of the offences brought against them.

“The testimonies of the prosecution witnesses in the matter were not challenged nor contradicted by the accused persons.

“Even when the court gave them liberty to do so, they could not prove otherwise.

“So, this honourable court is of the view that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt against the accused persons.

“This court found all of you guilty of the offence of cheating by impersonation, and hereby convicted accordingly.”

Akinpelu ordered that the expensive car, Laptops and mobile phones recovered from the convicts be forfeited to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ilorin Zonal Office, had secured the convictions of the four persons, charged for offences bordering on Internet fraud and other fraud related offences.

For instance, the charge against Sadiku reads:

“That you, Sadiku Muniru Dolapo (Alias Candace Sheply), sometime in 2018, at Ilorin, while acting as Candace Sheply, a white Caucasian: with Gmail account [email protected]

“Cheated by fraudulently inducing one Terry Rikerd in delivering to you the sum of N2.8 million and deposited it in your Guarantee Trust Bank account number: 0165061811, under the guise of being in a romantic relationship and stranded in Nigeria.

“Thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 322 of the same law.”

The charge against Samson reads:

“That you, Atoyebi Samson (William Grover), sometime in July 2019 in Ilorin, did cheat by impersonation, when you pretended to be one William Grover, a white female with Gmail account [email protected]

“Fraudulently deceived Charles Wood, an American citizen, to send $500 worth of gift card, after you made him believe you were a girl in love with him.

“You thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code, and punishable under Section 324 of the same law.”

A Babcock student, Godknows Adolphus Owhor is currently trending on Twitter following allegations of rape against him.

The student’s alleged victims came forward with their story after Twitter user @caramelangiee shared screenshots of a DM she got.

Another lady also accused him of defiling her when she was just 14.

Other ladies came out to accuse Owhor of rape including an alleged cousin.

Five women arraigned for allegedly smoking marijuana in public

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Thursday sentenced a driver, Akinola Suleiman, to 10 years imprisonment for importing 11 kilogrammes of hard drugs.

Justice Babs Kuewumi convicted Suleiman following a nearly seven-year trial before two judges.

He said the convict’s jail term would run from August 30, 2013, when he was arrested by the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The judge also ordered that the drugs seized from the convict be destroyed if there was no appeal against the judgment within the period stipulated by the law.

Kuewunmi, who plies the Ghana-Nigeria route, was found at the NDLEA checkpoint, Gbagi, Seme Border area, with 1.3kg of heroin neatly concealed in a big brown travel bag with false bottoms, hidden in a Toyota Camry car with registration number JJJ 584 AE Lagos.

He was charged before Justice Okon Abang on November 6, 2013, on two counts of importation of 1.3 kilograms of heroin and 9.75 kilogrammes of Ephedrine, a substance similar to cocaine, heroin and LSD.

The NDLEA said he violated Section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act, 2004.

Suleiman pleaded not guilty, but Abang declined to grant him bail on the ground that he was a flight risk.

When his trial commenced on February 20, 2014, prosecution counsel Aliyu Abubakar called four witnesses.

Following Justice Abang’s transfer to another division of the court and the parties’ inability to obtain a ‘fiat’ for the judge to complete the case, the convict’s trial started ‘de novo’ before Justice Kuewumi.

Fingerprints on fire extinguisher used to smash Vera Uwaila Omozuwa led to suspect’s arrest

The suspect arrested in connection with the gruesome rape and murder of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa was nabbed courtesy of fingerprints left on a fire extinguisher.

WuzupNigeria reports that Omozuwa, a 100 level Microbiology student of the University of Benin [UNIBEN] was attacked inside a Redeemed Christian Church of God Parish in Edo State. She was said to have gone to read in the church.

Her attackers were said to have left several bite marks on her body, broken her bones and strangulated her, leaving her for dead. Reports claimed the 22-year-old was a virgin as of the time of the attack.

The Edo State Police Command has, however, arrested one person in connection with the incident.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, the suspect was arrested following the screening of the fingerprints on the fire extinguisher allegedly used to smash the head of the deceased.

“The item used in the assault, which was a fire extinguisher, was recovered, immediately the operatives who were with some specialists screened the fingerprints which led to our suspect around the place of the incident, the suspect was arrested,” Nwabuzor said.

The murder of Uwa after she was raped in a church where she had gone to read had sparked outrage and protests in Benin, Lagos and Abuja with the hashtag #JusticeForUwa dominating social media trend since Sunday.

A group of protesters from the University of Benin (UNIBEN) students union, activists and some members of the public had on Monday stormed the headquarters of the state police command in Edo State demanding justice for Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.

The protesters wearing black outfits and bearing placards condemning rape staged a walk from the Kings Square area of Benin City and eventually took their message to the state police command headquarters at GRA.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, operations, Ayoola Ajala who received the protesters, assured them that investigations have commenced and arrests have been made in connection to Uwa’s murder.

Among those who reacted in condemnation of the tragic death of Vera was the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, APC lawmaker representing Ovia federal constituency in the House of Representatives John. Dennis Idahosa and General Overseer and Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide Pastor Johnson Suleiman.

Publicity Secretary of the PDP in the state, Mr Chris Nehikhare in a statement in Benin said it was saddened by the brutal rape and murder of Miss Vera.

The party noted that “education is the cornerstone of sustainable development and meaningful progress…our youth must be told”.

Mr.Idahosa in a statement signed by his media aide Mr Osaro Aghedo said:

“I’m shocked and deeply anguished to hear about the death of Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100 level student of University of Benin, Micro Biology department who was a victim of rape that took place on May 29th, in Benin and later died 30th of May 2020.”

He stated that:

“Action and not words is required to check incidents like this heinous rape. We must identify the causes and find solutions for such criminal depravity in our society.”

While expressing condolences to the bereaved’s family, friends and the university community, the lawmaker called on “all Security agencies to fish out the perpetrator of such dastardly act.
