Ghost workers’ menace increasing in our LGAs, say Nasarawa govt

Published

The Nasarawa State Government on Friday expressed concern over the menace of ghost workers across the 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

Mr Haruna Osegba, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, raised the alarm in Lafia during the Joint Accounts Allocation Committee (JAAC) meeting.

Osegba said the ministry had discovered the names of local government pensioners in staff payment vouchers.

“The names of people who had left the service either through retirement, death, resignation or transfer of service still appears in the payment vouchers of various LGAs.

“Over 4, 000 persons have left the service of the LGAs in Education and Health departments alone since 2011, yet the wage bill remained N2.1 billion,” he said.

The commissioner said the ministry would investigate the sharp practice and anyone found culpable would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

He directed the management of the various LGAs to submit their authentic payment Vouchers and bank details to the ministry before they could access their money.

Responding, Aminu Maifata, Chairman of Lafia LGA, who is the Chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), assured that the LGAs would cooperate with the ministry to address the trend.
