Girl, 14, takes herbs to terminate unwanted pregnancy, dies in the process

Tragedy struck Andaha Community in the Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State after a 14-year-old girl, committed suicide over an unwanted pregnancy in Akwanga local government area of the state.

The deceased identified as Miss Anigta Haledu Ibrahim had been in a relationship with a yet-to-be-identified man which led to her getting pregnant.

Upon noticing she was pregnant, her parents had cautioned her not to terminate the pregnancy but the deceased deliberately turned deaf ears to their advice and took herbs which led to her death.

According to PUNCH METRO, the incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased popularly called Bonny was a student of Government Science School in Andaha Community in the Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Mr Audu Iliya the Personal Assistant to the commissioner of information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Dogo Shamah, who was at the scene of the incident said;

“The incident occurred when she met a guy and started a relationship. She became pregnant and when her parents discovered it, they asked her who was responsible and she revealed to them”.

“Her mother advised her to keep the pregnancy but she didn’t listen. She went ahead and drank native herbs in order to terminate the pregnancy. When she took the herbs, she went straight to the bush and laid there. It was a passerby who saw her and reported the incident to the people in the community,” he added.

He continued:

“She was then taken to a General Hospital in Gwantu, the headquarters of Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State where she was admitted.

Unfortunately, in the early hours of today, she died”.

“The boy who put her in a family way is nowhere to be found. We got some information that he has left the village to Abuja. Meanwhile, the burial arrangements are ongoing” he stated.

When contacted, the Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Ramhan Nansel said the police were yet to receive the report.
