Gombe court jails contractors for 12 years over $44,700 fraud

A court sitting in Gombe has jailed two men for six years each for conspiracy and stealing.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission [EFCC] had dragged Yusuf Usman and Sani Ahmed before Justice Abubakar Jauro of the Gombe State High Court on a two-count on February 27, 2019.

The duo pleaded “guilty” to the charges.

The trial judge, thereafter, fixed March 4, 2019, for conviction and sentencing.

Count two of the charge reads:

“That you, Yusuf Usman and Sani Ahmed at Gombe, in the Gombe Judicial Division of the High Court of Gombe State, with intent did dishonestly commit theft to with fraudulently convert the sum of $44,700 (Forty Four Thousand Seven Hundred Dollars) from one Abdullahi Nabunkari by falsely claiming the said sum was meant for the facilitation of a construction contract award by the Gombe State Government to your own use and thereby committed an offence contrary to and Punishable under Section 286 and 287 of the Penal Code Law, Laws of Northern Nigeria.”

Justice Jauro convicted them and sentenced them to three years in prison on each count to run consecutively.

The court further ordered on the application of prosecution counsel, I. O. Akande, that restitution be made to the nominal complainant within six months of the judgement to be effected by the EFCC for the whole amount.
