Published

Gombe state Chapter Association of Resident Doctors, says over 45 doctors have left the employ of the state government owing to poor welfare and delay in placement.

According to the  chairman Dr. Saidu Alhassan,  there has been mass exodus of his colleagues from the state medical facilities to neighbouring states.

Alhassan disclosed this in an interview with  correspondents on Monday on the sideline to the indefinite strike declared by the Association.

He noted that for the remaining doctors around the work load has since increased while the welfare package is yet to be improved.

He said, “We have about 16 doctors doing their internship in Federal Teaching Hospital and have not been upgraded.90-95 % of doctors have issues of promotion. We want government to upgrade our members appropriately.

“The Massive exodus of doctors, we have doctors leaving to neighbouring state due to poor welfare package about three months ago we lost about 30 doctors and in the last month we have lost about 15 doctors. For the remaining ones available the patient load is getting too much.”

Meanwhile the Commissioner for Health Dr. Ahmad Gana has condemned the strike action saying it against moral ethics of medical practice, and a demonstration of the association’s level of insensitivity to the plight of the public.

Gana during a press briefing said the strike action is Ill-timed, especially  at a period the global community is battling to contain the dreaded Coronavirus, while Gombe State is also trying to contain outbreaks of Lassa fever.

The commissioner of health, noted that despite the lean resources of the state,  it has invested heavily in the health sector.

“The government is fully aware of the concerns of the resident doctors and despite the financial constraints, has already set in motion machineries to holistically address the demands in both short and long terms” Gana said.
