This is what happens to used balls and other games equipment at the Olympics
Have you ever wondered what happens to soccer balls, tennis balls, rugby balls and other sports equipment used at the Olympics?
Some of the balls get taken away by the players. For example, one of the ball used in the men’s football final at the 1996 Olympics involving Nigeria and Argentina was taken away by Nigeria’s Jay jay Okocha, according to soccerballworld.com.
Some of the balls will forever sit in exhibition galleries. For example, the golf ball used by the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medalist golfer, Justin Rose will live as an artifact forever in the Olympic Golf Course clubhouse in Brazil, according to GolfDigest.com.
But if you still want to own any of the equipment from Rio2016 without either being a player or a gallery curator, you can buy them.
The used sports equipment and country parade flags for the opening and closing ceremonies are up for auction as memorabilia of the games.
According to the Rio 2016 website, the ball used in the final match of the Women’s rugby sevens between New Zealand and Australia is up for sale at 1,505 real (N150,249). The tennis ball used for the women’s doubles, round 1, by Serena Williams/ Venus. Williams (USA) v L. Safarova/ B. Strycova (CZE), is currently biding at R$900.00 (N89,850). The tennis ball used in the men’s doubles, round 1, by T. Belucci/ A. Sa (BRA) v Andy Murray/ Jamie Murray (GBR) with its acrylic display stand is bidding for R$335.00 (N33,444). The Athletes parade flag carried by Team Nigeria at the Olympic Opening, with commemorative leather tag is biding for R$150.00(N14,975).
The Olympic Organising Committee promises that all the items are authentic and can be shipped internationally and the auction is expected to remain active until the end of October.
So what are you waiting for. Go grab you own.
