Heavy rainfall has destroyed 100 houses and displaced 300 persons in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, WuzupNigeria reports.

It was gathered that downpour led to flooding in the area.

The rain, which started around 3 am on Sunday and ended around 12 pm, destroyed houses and submerged large sections of the metropolis.

Meanwhile, residents of the area have lamented the effect of the flooding on their houses.

A resident of Eket, who simply identified himself as Umoetuk, said areas mostly affected include Grace Bill, Marina Junction, and Udoh Umoh.

Another resident, Sam Abia, said when it rains for two hours the entire houses around Grace Bill are usually affected.

“Flooding around Grace Bill is a normal sight here. When it rains for two hours, the whole area around the Grace Bill road is always flooded,” he said.

A worker with the Eket LG, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, described the Sunday’s flooding as “a perennial problem”.

He called on both the council chairman, Frank Archibong, and Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, to come to the aid of the people by constructing a drainage system to address the problem.

“This is a yearly occurrence. Last year, we had the same problem and it’s here again this year.

“We are appealing to the chairman of Eket and our Governor who is from this senatorial district to address this problem by constructing a drainage system to tackle the problem,” he said
