Human rights group re-arrests, charges rapist freed by police
A human rights group, Behind Bars Intervention (BBI), said it has facilitated the re-arrest of a suspected rapist who defiled a three-year-old girl in Nekede, Imo state.
Founder of the group, Harrison Gwamnishu took to Facebook to disclose this on Tuesday.
He said the 24-year-old suspect, Isaac John, from Taraba state has been charged to court.
Harrison noted that the family of the victim had lost interest in the case, but the group reopened it and went after the suspect after it got a tipoff from a Facebook user that the suspect had been released by the police.
He wrote,
“Yesterday, we intensified effort and re-arrested a paedophile who defiled a 3yrs old girl in Nekede Imo State.
“The family of the victim lost interest in seeking for justice. We received information from a facebook follower who alerted us and we quickly launched investigations.
“First step was meeting with the family in Imo State. We got approval to re-investigate the case, we took the girl to Federal Medical Centre Owerri where she was examined. The medical report proved she has been defiled (Hymen broken) and signs of infections.
“We visited the Police station and discovered the suspect has been released. With the help of Divisional Crime officer, we got the suspect re-arrested.
“This morning, the suspect Isaac John, 24 years old from Taraba State has been charged to court.”
