I killed my friend so I could take his tipper lorry for myself – suspect
A man has narrated to the police in Kwara State how he murdered his friend and co-worker, identified simply as Baba Oyin, out of envy.
The suspect, Jamiu Suleiman, was paraded by the police in Ilorin on Wednesday, alongside 17 other criminals.
According to the police, Suleiman shot and killed Baba Oyin in Ikorodu, Lagos State in October 2019 and fled to Ilorin.
The state commissioner of police, Kayode Egbetokun, who paraded the suspects, said that Jamiu, in connivance with some other people killed a friend of his in Ikorodu area of Lagos and took his tipper lorry before relocating to Ilorin.
Speaking of another alleged criminal, one Adamu Bawa, an indigene of Katsina state, the CP said the suspect absconded to Tsaragi town in Kwara state after allegedly committing a crime of kidnapping in his state.
Speaking in an interview, Jamiu who confessed that he killed his friend Baba Oyin said that he killed him because he wanted to have his Tipper lorry which he was using in his sand business.
He said,
“Myself and Baba Oyin are friends, we are engaged in Quarry business in Ikorodu. Baba Oyin has a tipper which he used to carry sand for customers and he used to get a lot of money. So, I decided to kill him and have his tipper lorry so that I will be getting money like him.
” One day I tricked him that I have a business in a place that is far away from our business place in Ikorodu. It was in the bush where I knew that people would not see us and he didn’t know that I have a gun. When we went far into the forest in Ikorodu, I shot him with my gun and took his tipper lorry. I came with the tipper lorry to Ilorin to use it for the sand business before I was arrested by the Police in Ilorin.”
Jamiu said that he bought the gun which he used for the killing of Baba Oyin from a man in Ikorodu at N70,000.
However, Bawa, an indigene of Katsina state who was arrested for alleged kidnapping denied the allegation levelled against him, saying that he was arrested in Tsaragi area of the state after attending a village market to purchase food items for his family.
He said he had since been living in the state, urged the police authority to check facts of his case to ensure justice is done, and release him to go and take care of his ailing mother.
The police boss also said that 16 suspected land grabbers were arrested at Egbejila community in the Ilorin West local government area of the state for allegedly disturbing public peace after a disagreement on ownership of land.
He said though no life was lost, the suspects attacked, with a matchet, a policeman who was at the area to discharge his lawful duty.
However, the suspects, said a group of people, led by a resident of Osere community, attacked them in a bid to take over their land.
Egbetokun said that the suspects would be charged to court for prosecution as soon as investigations were completed.
