Ighalo speaks on Manchester United loan extension

Former Man Utd striker Dimitar Berbatov has admitted the club’s new loan signing Odion Ighalo has ‘proved him wrong’.

Ighalo has hit the ground running at Old Trafford since his shock arrival on deadline day of the January transfer window.

The former Watford striker bagged a brace in United’s 3-0 win over Derby on Thursday to take his tally to three in two starts.

Despite only being on a temporary contract, Ighalo could yet be rewarded with a permanent deal, and Berbatov conceded the Nigerian is doing better than he expected.

“I’m really happy to see that Odion Ighalo is settling in well and he deserves it with the way he is playing, how he links the plays and the goals he is scoring,” he told Betfair.

“All the team are happy when he scores which shows he is fully integrated, and I like the way he looks for the ball and bullies the defenders.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t know too much about him before he joined… I knew about his record in the Premier League but I questioned if he was the right man and if he would get into the team, but so far he is doing well and proving me wrong.”

Ighalo struck two poachers goals to help United see off Derby and progress to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

United are currently on a rich vein of form which has seen them go unbeaten in their last nine fixtures across all competitions.

Key to that has been the arrivals of Ighalo and fellow new signing Bruno Fernandes, with both players set to be in the squad for Sunday’s trip to neighbours Man City.

And Berbatov feels Fernandes, in particular, can make a significant difference in the clash with their local rivals.

“Bruno Fernandes is scoring and is full of confidence, he gives the team that extra creativity and hopefully his first derby will be a win, and why not?” Berbatov added.

“When you come into a new country and a new team you already know who your big rivals are going to be and now in the lead-up to Sunday he is going to know what this game is all about.”
