Instagram comedienne, Maraji, sparks outrage with her ‘Jesus is the only way’ post on Sallah day
One of Nigeria’s popular Instagram comedienne, Gloria Oloruntobi popularly known as Maraji seems to have landed herself in deep waters with her straight-forward post where she declared that Jesus is the only way to heaven.
In a series of posts on her Instagram story on Sunday, Maraji had shared some graphics with inscriptions like
“There is only one way to heaven. No Allah, No Buddha, No Krishna, No Evolution. Only Jesus.”
She also shared another post which was a response to a curious fan who had asked her if she doesn’t feel people with other religious beliefs, especially Muslims, would get offended by her post. The fan also asked if Christians and Muslims worship the same God.
She responded:
“We don’t worship the same God. Do they believe Jesus is the son of God?”
The posts sparked outrage on social media as some Nigerians lambasted her for sharing such publicly.
Maraji who seems not to be bothered by the outrage her posts generated took to IG story again to share a graphic with a quote:
“I will not violate the teaching of the text in order to somehow sound more appropriate for the culture.”
Taking offense to her belief as expressed in the series of posts, some Nigerians on Twitter have been calling for the heads of the comedienne over claims that her posts are insensitive and capable of sparking religious violence.
Maraji is a terrible human. She had to pick the biggest day in the Muslim calendar to post that. Do you know that could incite crimes & genocide against humanity? especially in Nigeria where there’s Christian-Muslim strife. 50 people killed themselves in Kaduna not too long ago.

They also slammed her for sharing such posts on a day the Muslims are celebrating Eid-el-Kabir.
Some, however, took exception to the outrage as they claimed she did nothing wrong by sharing her belief. They argued that what she shared is not new as it is a cliche which is as old as religion itself.
Most Christians believe other religions are wrong and their adherents will burn in hell.
Most Muslims believe other religions are wrong and their adherents will burn in hell.
Same with Hindus, Sikhs, Judaists etc. It is the nature of Religion. Maraji didn’t say anything new

See some of the reactions:
If Maraji’s IG post motivates people to kill others, Maraji is not the problem; their religion is. https://t.co/7iRyDNEbjl

Nope. If Maraji’s post or any post on religion motivates people to kill, Maraji is not the problem…the religion is not the problem…The person who chose to kill is the problem. If you’re a violent person, your Islam, Christianity, Trad, Atheist faith will likely be violent. https://t.co/S6kJopAelY

The most Annoying part of this is that the Muslims aren’t even Angry with Maraji, they are busy with their meat
But Sunday school dropouts are carrying the matter on their head like illaya ?♂️

Maraji is not talking to Muslims. I’m a Muslim, & I serve only one God. That God is called Allah in Arabic. Lots of Christians are Arabs or speak Arabic. God is Allah in Arabic (She no sabi). I believe in Jesus (Isa), may blessings of Allah be upon him. She’s not talking to U & I pic.twitter.com/lGspJtnZRc

“mArAjI waS InSenSiTiVe, Yen yEn YeN”
But it’s during Ogboni or ifa festivals that u’ll remember to type “all power belongs to Jesus”
Or when u see a post about Gays, that you’ll remember the story of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Mahfren if u don’t geddifok

The misconception is that Maraji aired what she believes. When actually she aired what Jesus believes. It wasn’t her opinion.
Jesus is the problem. He is offensive.

Interestingly, the people who’re most offended by what Maraji said are not Muslims (because they hold the same view of her religion), but alté Christians who want to demonstrate how tolerant and progressive they are.

I see a lot of Christians insulting fellow Christians on this matter (Na una sabi), Christians insulting Muslims (una go dey Alright). What I sha know is, Maraji is not talking to me or other Muslims. Back to eating my Salah meat ?. Happy Eid Celebration.

Ok let me break this thing down in the easiest way possible.
YOU CANNOT AND SHOULD NOT VALIDATE YOUR OWN FAITH BY INSULTING OTHER PEOPLE’S FAITHS.#maraji

Christians coming on twitter to drag Maraji even though deep down we were taught to believe what she said pic.twitter.com/WEu9Y7gH9W

But wait o, don’t Muslims have their own heaven? Why do you want to enter the Christian heaven that Maraji was referring to?
I’m kuku going to the Hindu hell, so, I’m a lost cause.

I’M A HUGE FAN BUT YOU ARE SO DISRESPECTFUL. AND THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO SEE THIS. @Maraji_ pic.twitter.com/rE5efaFxwD

Interestingly, I have seen that girl’s skits a few times but never even knew her name was Maraji until today.
Anyway, the difference is priorities. Nigerians need to focus on more important things than banter over an opinion.

No one group will accept the superiority of another’s religious text, therefore, we should pursue peace for the sake of our humanity.
