Islamic cleric defrauds man seeking govt appointment, Qur’anic knowledge of N3m, $24,000

The Kaduna Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested a self-proclaimed Islamic cleric Mallam Abdulrashid Imam for allegedly defrauding Arc. Mohammed Dewu of N3 million and $24,000 USD.

Dewu had alleged in a petition that, sometime in October, the suspect fraudulently collected money from him claiming to have the supernatural ability to impact Qur’anic knowledge on him through the aid of Jinns (spirits).

The anti-graft spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren disclosed this in a statement in Abuja.

He added,

“To facilitate this, the petitioner claimed that the suspect induced him to purchase the following items: Two number of bottle perfume at N70,000; one bottle of special perfume at N160,000; a bottle of perfume for the treatment of his mother’s leg at N550,000; a set of 60 perfumes to activate the Qur’anic verses that will be implanted into his brain by spiritual means at N1,680,000; two mobile phones and SIM cards at N20,000 and thirty buckets of honey that will enable him transfer the Qur’anic verses to his brain at N900,000.

“The petitioner also alleged that the suspect compelled him to pay the sum of $24,000 for prayers to neutralize the forces preventing from getting a plum appointment which the government had planned for him.

“Upon the suspect’s arrest, a fake blank Qur’an and keys to the room he had been using to con the victim, were recovered”.

Mechanic docked over alleged motorcycle theft

A 28-year-old mechanic, Amos Raphael on Friday appeared before an Okitipupa Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State for allegedly stealing a motorcycle worth N170,000.

Raphael,  whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing, to which he pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Zedekiah Orogbemi told the court that the defendant committed the offenses with one other still at large, on July 2, at  7.30 p.m., along Okitipupa-Erinje Road in Okitipupa.

Orogbemi said that the defendant stole a blue Qlink motorcycle with registration number Ondo KTP 341 JA, engine number DRJ34942, from where it was parked, the property of Mr. Kingsley Agboje.

The Prosecutor said the offenses contravened Sections 516 and 390(9) of the Criminal  Law of Ondo State, 2006.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Musa Al-Yunu,  granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Al-Yunu said that the surety should show evidence of a year’s tax payment to the Ondo State  Government.

He said that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Teacher who raped pastor’s daughter, 10, sentenced to life imprisonment

A teacher, Omotayo Adanlawo has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Ondo State High Court for raping a 10-year-old girl.

The judge, Justice Samuel Bola, who gave the judgement, said the defendant failed to give convincing evidence and testimony to prove his innocence in the rape allegations.

The sexual assault incident occured on August 24 2018. Adanlawo who used to attend the girl’s father’s church, allegedly went to the victim’s house at Iju in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State when she was alone and raped her after which he threatened her not to tell anyone else she will die.

After the incident, the victim was said to have complained of stomach pains as she could not walk afterwards. Her mother took her to a hospital for examination where it was revealed that the girl had been raped.

According to a family source, after rigorous interrogation, the little girl opened up and said Adanlawo had sexual intercourse with her.

The case was then reported at Iju-Itaogbolu Divisional Headquarters before being transfered to Ala area command, and a medical report revealed that there was actual penetration into the 10-year-old girl’s private part.

Adanlawo, in his statement before the police, claimed the young girl told him to lay on her after asking for 50 naira and chinchin, but during cross examination he claimed that he was at his home at the time of the incident.

He also claimed to be battling with hernia and as such was not medically fit to have had sexual intercourse with the girl.

Justice Bola in his judgement, however, said the prosecution was able to prove there was penetration in the rape allegation against Adanlawo.

He also said the defendant gave no medical report to prove his condition as well as any evidence to suggest he was in his house as claimed on the day of the incident.

The Judge subsequently sentenced Adanlawo to life imprisonment in line with section 358 of the crimanal laws of Ondo State.

Justice Samuel Bola of an Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has sentenced a teacher, Omotayo Adanlawo, to life imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl.

Justice Bola said the defendant failed to give convincing evidence and testimony to prove his innocence in the rape allegations.

It was gathered that on August 24 2018, Adanlawo who used to attend the girl’s father’s church, went to the victim’s house at Iju in Akure North Local Government Area of the state while she was alone and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her after which he threatened her not to tell anyone else she will die.

After the incident, the victim was said to have complained of stomach pains as she could not walk afterwards prompting her mother to take her to a hospital for examination where it was revealed that the girl had been defiled.

The case was then reported at Iju-Itaogbolu Divisional Headquarters before being transferred to Ala area command, and a medical report revealed that there was actual penetration into the 10-year-old girl’s private part.

Based on the legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecution, Adanlawo was dragged before Justice Samuel Bola on a one-count charge of rape contrary to Section 357 and punishable under Section 358 of the Criminal Law of Ondo state.

While the prosecution led by a state counsel, Stella Adegoke called five witnesses including the victim and her mother, the defendant was the only one who stood for himself.

Adanlawo in his statement before the police claimed the young girl told him to lay on her after asking for 50 naira and ‘chinchin’, but during cross-examination, he had claimed that he was at home at the time of the incident.

He also claimed to be battling with hernia and as such was not medically fit to have had sexual intercourse with the girl.

Justice Bola in his judgement, however, said the prosecution was able to prove there was penetration in the rape allegation against Adanlawo.

Recall that a middle-aged man, Blessing Kingsley was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment by a High Court sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, for raping a 14-year-old girl.
