Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, on Thursday opened a Holocaust memorial event, in Jerusalem, by citing a first-hand account by a Red Army soldier who had seen the horrors of the Auschwitz death camp.

“The Earth is sighing with the atrocities that those victims suffered.

“In the name of the Jewish people, I thank you for your solidarity.

“Thank you for your commitment to the memory of the Holocaust, to the citizens of the world who believe in freedom and the dignity of man,” Rivlin said.

He also warned of the dangers of anti-Semitism, adding that it is a chronic disease.

“But the state of Israel is not a victim. The state of Israel will forever be a guarantee for the safety of Jews,” he said.
