It took me years to unlearn, Lady narrates how social media gave her wrong perception about relationship
Social media is home to all shades of lifestyle and information – the fake and the real lifestyle, the truths and the lies people share to chase clout. It is left to the individual user to decide whatever he/she wants to do with the information flying on social media.
A South African lady identified Shakirah Dramat who have led her life by social media standards seems to have realised that such standard could spell doom for her if she doesn’t retrace her steps.
The lady took to Twitter recently to narrate how she is now enjoying her love life after detaching herself from the standards set by some social media users for a 21st-century relationship.
She said she endured an abusive relationship for long because the man was showering her with gifts and it took her time to appreciate her new lover who was not showering her with gifts but gave her peace.
Going into a new relationship Shakirah said she had high expectations and it took her years to unlearn the perception of love and gifts social media made her believe was a compulsion in a relationship.

She tweeted:
“My ex showered me with gifts and expensive dates. He also cheated a lot and emotionally abused me. My current doesn’t buy me anything and it used to kill me in the beginning until I realized that he gives me peace of mind, worships the ground I walk on and supports my dreams.
“I hate that social media made me believe that if a man loved me, he had to buy me stuff. Took me years to unlearn that expectation and to understand that everyone has their own love language.”

She added:
“I find that “not having it all” is only a problem if we make it 1. I thought a relationship was supposed to give me everything. But some things you get from friendships/fam, other things from work and some things you give urself. A partner doesn’t necessarily have to play every role.”
Another Twitter user who reacted to the post also shared a similar experience.
She tweeted:
I also had the “buy flowers and shower me with expensive gifts” kinda guy who abused me emotionally for days. Even bought me a Mercedes-Benz A200… And had it delivered to work but the abuse was intense!!! Realized I’m better off broke and happy. These rich bastards are the pits!
