Lovers of literary works are expressing their disappointments at a Nigerian social media user for creating an online poll to judge who is a better writer between Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka and Chimamanda Adichie.

The social media user had posted a picture of the two writers via her Twitter handle @shakyshakydaddy, asking social media users to decide who is a better writer between the duo.

He wrote:

“Who’s the best Nigerian writer alive? RT for Wole Soyinka. Like for Chimamanda Adichie.”

The poll has evoked anger among some social media users, who opined that it was a needless comparison.

Responding to the poll,  a Twitter user @Probably_Dafe wrote

“Wait… Wole Soyinka??? Soyinka of Ake? That wrote The Man Died?? That wrote The Jero Plays? Madmen and Specialists? Telephone Conversation? Lion and Jewel? This same Wole Soyinka is who you want to be compared with Chimamanda? Una no dey try…”

Na like this una start MJ and Beyonce. There is no reason for this comparison. Both are accomplished but comparing them would mean diminishing what Chimamanda has/is done/doing. Let’s just enjoy them both.

Soyinka’s Lion and the Jewel will be ever-revered, Adichie’s purple hibiscus is great too. I see no reason for comparisons.
