It’s not too far from the truth, Nigerians react as US Embassy denies students visa ban
Nigerians have throng the social media page of the Embassy of the United States of America in Nigeria to express their displeasure over the large number of applicants being denied visa by the embassy.
The Embassy, had taken to Twitter on Monday to describe as false the report by an online medium that it had placed a ban on study visa for Nigerians until further notice.
In a tweet via its verified Twitter handle @USEmbassyAbuja, it wrote:
“#FakeNews Alert! Be advised, reports of Student Visa ban for Nigerians is false. If you have seen such manufactured item on Facebook and Twitter or received it via WhatsApp, please communicate that it is false.”
The tweet has evoked series of reactions from Nigerians.
While a few commended the embassy for debunking the report, a large number of those who responded slammed the US Embassy for always denying Nigerian students visa despite securing admission and paying the necessary tuition fees to study in the country.
Many of them used the opportunity to narrate their visa denial experiences and wondered the difference between the fake news and the reported visa denial of many student applicants who secured admission in the US.
See some of the reactions:
My friend was given admission by a school in US and you denied him visa twice. So why shouldn’t we believe the news?

Many people that apply for American Visa were denied without any justification. I was told that I wont come back when I only wanted to stay two weeks .It is immoral to be collecting Visa Fee from Nigerians and act as if it is a revenue source for USA.Things like this may support

…and how can you explain denying a student, who have secured admission with scholarship and also have an uncle, a lecturer at the same school he was admitted, who will make his stay and education more comfortable, a visa after two attempts in two months?

Maybe “Ban” wud have been better, when a vast majority are been refused & no cogent reason given, then don’t blame them if they interpret it as “Ban”. @UKinNigeria still remains the best, they always take their time to explain to applicants the reasons for their actions.

And it’s very painful when you come out to deny the obvious truth! YOUR EMBASSIES DENIES VIRTUALLY EVERY NIGERIAN STUDENT VISA!! You re just trying to save face!! This is just annoying and should be condemned!

Your policies is such that any student coming from Nigeria would be denied even when you have not openly said it but if you can be plain and candid enough to bring out your internal data, it will show discrimination against Nigeria students wishing to study abroad!! Too bad!

@USEmbassyLagos Denied me visa because the consular officer thought I won’t come back after the convention that I will be attending. It’s heartbreaking. I even wanted to show her supporting documents to show my trip is sponsored she declined.

It’s not too far from the truth that, visa officers at the @USEmbassyLagos are gross racist, I was denied of my long anticipated dream of becoming an internationally acclaimed social worker at the @UNC_SSW without any reason.

I got admission at American National University (ANU) but you denied me visa last year Aug3rd and even upon booking an emergency appointment by Aug8 you still denied it. I paid for visa fee twice. This ain’t fair ?

Even at that, d process of student visa application at US embassies in Nigeria is an extortion on d gullible & exposed Nigerians who are left with no options but 2 keep pushing their lucks. It is robbery on our hard earned tokens being taken every time such applications come up

I also think as a matter of policy, US should consider refund of application fee for any visa that is declined. Or the payment should only be made when the visa has been granted…minimum wage is still $50 here…Bikonnnu.

When you say visa fee. It means that money is meant to be funds for visa issued. They need to change the terminology to “visa application fee”. And for this application, N30,000 should do it. So once you are granted a visa you’ll be asked to make additional payments “visa fee”.

The most painful is when I was turned back denied interview with my wife and 2 children for attempting to reschedule my appointment more than two time. And N240,000 went down the drain twice. So how do you as embassy convince Nigerians this is not Neo-Colonialism.
