June 12: Osun civil society coalition seeks democratic sustainability

Published

The Osun Civil Society Coalition (OCSC) has called for the continuous sustainability of democracy in the country, with the execution of people-oriented policies and programs by governments at all levels.

The Chairman of the coalition, Mr. Waheed Lawal, made the call during a news conference to commemorate the June 12 celebration, on Friday in Osogbo.

Lawal said: “The historical antecedent of June 12 celebration had started in Osun during the military regime; yet, comrades never relented in their efforts to sustain the celebration.

“Osun had been the only state in Nigeria to have started the celebration. Today, history has been made to justify the agitation for civil and democratic rule.

“It is now a Democracy Day officially and this is our gain.”

According to him, the state government gave recognition to June 12 and supported it with a public holiday even before it was recognized nationally.

Lawal commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the honor bestowed on the late Chief M. K. O. Abiola and the entire Nigerians.

According to him, democracy is the bedrock of any society, hence the need for its sustenance.

Lawal called on Nigerians to pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives during the struggle to entrench democracy in the country.
